VP, Data

Full Time - Austin, TX

As the Vice President of Data, you will be a key leader within our Executive team. This role is responsible for shaping and executing the company’s data strategy. You will oversee a comprehensive portfolio encompassing data engineering, data science, analytics engineering, business analytics, machine learning (ML) engineering, data architecture, and data governance. Your role will be crucial in leveraging data-driven insights to inform business decisions, build exceptional product experiences, enhance operational efficiency, and contribute to the overall growth and success of the company.

Data Strategy and Vision

  • Develop and implement a robust data strategy aligned with the company's business objectives
  • Drive innovation in data management, analytics, and machine learning to stay ahead of industry trends

Team Leadership

  • Provide strong leadership to a diverse team of data professionals, including data engineers, data scientists, analytics engineers, business analysts, and ML engineers
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance culture within the data organization and with cross-functional teams, including Marketing, Operations, Finance, and Product teams

Data Engineering and Architecture

  • Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of scalable and efficient data pipelines and storage
  • Define and implement data architecture best practices, ensuring data integrity and availability
  • Develop strong relationships with application engineering teams to maximize their effective use of data in building incredible product experiences

Data Science and Machine Learning

  • Lead the data science and ML teams to develop predictive models and algorithms to enhance product experience and business decision-making
  • Explore and implement cutting-edge technologies in machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Prioritize data science initiatives to drive the most business impact with the least effort
  • Build a robust machine learning platform and infrastructure to enable rapid model design, implementation, validation, calibration, documentation, feature engineering, deployment, batch and real-time inference, and ongoing monitoring
  • Oversee a best practices experimentation program to measure the impact of new features on customer and Runner (that’s what we call our delivery drivers) behavior while fostering a culture of statistical rigor and data-based decision-making

Analytics Engineering and Business Analytics

  • Drive the development of analytics solutions, including a self-service visualization platform and complex analytics projects to provide actionable insights to various teams
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand their business objectives and inform key performance indicator selection, performance measurement, opportunity identification, strategic planning, and analysis

Data Governance

  • Establish and enforce data governance policies and procedures to ensure accuracy, integrity, and security of company data
  • Collaborate with information security to ensure compliance with data protection regulations and industry standards

Skills You Have

  • An advanced degree or equivalent experience in computer science, engineering, data science, mathematics, statistics, or a related field
  • Proven experience (15+ years) in a leadership role overseeing data-related functions
  • Expert-level knowledge of statistical methods and ML methods and patterns, including statistical analysis, natural language processing, deep learning, predictive modeling, time-series analysis, experimental design, and outcome optimization.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams, executives, and board-level leadership
  • A demonstrated track record of creating strategic relationships across the business while driving alignment on high-priority, high-visibility initiatives
  • Expertise in organizational design and building a data team with a diverse range of technical and business domain expertise
  • Experience with business intelligence and data visualization software, such as Looker and Tableau
  • Experience implementing scalable, distributed, and highly available ML systems using Amazon Web Services
  • Knowledge of data warehouse design, Extract, Transform, and Load/Extract, Load, and Transform processes, data governance best practices, and tools including Snowflake, Redshift, dbt, Hevo, and Monte Carlo
  • Familiarity with experimentation frameworks and statistical concepts related to A/B and multivariate testing
  • High proficiency in relational database and query languages (e.g. SQL, Athena, Spectrum) 
  • Familiarity with R/Python. 
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, particularly in storytelling with data in a presentation setting
